Most reptiles need a place to bask. Many reptiles are active during the daytime and love to sit under a light, so you'll need to provide one of these for your Reptile Terrarium. Being cold-blooded, reptiles need some heat to get their blood moving and to help them digest. A reptile basking lamp of the appropriate wattage should be placed in the center or off to one side of the terrarium so you can see your pet reptile easier (not hidden in the background). An interesting place for your reptile to sit and bask under the lamp would perhaps be an unusual piece of driftwood, a bamboo root, a jungle vine or even a twisted tambora wood root.
Plastic/Rubbermaid tubs: The feeding trough sizes are great for turtles! You can half-fill them with water, pile rocks in a corner for the basking area, put a lilypad or two in it, and have your own indoor pond complete with turtles! For the more common sizes, the sweater boxes and shoe boxes, any non-aquatic herp can be kept in them. In fact, these are used in breeding racks and in households with too many herps to be able to have the amount of tanks/cages to keep them all in. Not good for arboreals, as they cannot climb. Perfect for use during the quarantine period prior to introducing a new animal to an established collection. These restrict viewing, and are generally limited to hatchling animals. Good to use as an emergency/isolation enclosure.
Your snake's home, for instance, must be a cage or large aquarium where it feels comfortable. That means it must be able to move about freely, with enough room to slither and curl as it pleases. The cage lid must be secure enough so that it cannot escape and the floor should be lined with torn newspaper. Never line your cage floor with anything that expels ammonia or doesn't dry quickly. Do research on the kind of snake you'll be getting so that you'll know if it needs to burrow. If that's the case, you'll need to line the cage with potting soil or sand. Some reptile supplies stores even sell reptile carpets which are perfect for some snakes.
