Just like many lizards, geckos can drop their tails as a defense mechanism. That is widely known, but what is not so known is that the Crested Gecko cannot grow its tail back. For the others, the tails the regenerate do not look the same as the one they lost. It will have duller colors and markings, and it will be shorter and stubbier. It may even be malformed. One more interesting tidbit here: They store fat in their tails to get them through lean times. It holds fat, and also nutrition, so it's not just a source of energy.
Lizards can be found in all continents other than Antarctica. There are many different species of lizards and these reptiles come in different sizes too. If you are thinking of adopting a lizard as a pet, there are many things to take into consideration before making your decision. Not only do you have to take into consideration the size of lizard, also spend some time investigating the temperament. Not all types of lizards are ideal as pets.
If you have kids, then think about getting a leopard gecko, water dragon or bearded dragon as not all lizards are ideal pets for children. Make sure you teach your kids how to take care of the lizard and supervise them in the beginning to ensure they handle them correctly.
The Leopard Gecko, by the way, gets its name because it does in fact have colorings and marking like a leopard. They are adorable animals. The sex of their newborns is determined by the temperature at which incubation occurs. If it is around 80, the hatchling will likely be a female. At 90, it will probably be a male. A temperature right in between can provide either result.
Size - if you don't have the room for a large lizard like a bearded dragon, than an anole might be a better option. Anoles are small and hardy, and don't require large enclosures. The main concern is that they're so small, kids can easily hurt them, and if one gets away from a child outside of its tank, it's really hard to find. Your child will have to understand that the anole must stay in its tank (like a pet fish), or else it can get lost - and if you live in a colder climate this means death to your little pet.
