The feeding of a pet lizard is extremely essential. Some lizards eat insects, while others consume just leaves. Some lizards are omnivorous and can eat plants, small animals and also insects. So, make sure you know what to feed your lizard when you are purchasing it. However, it is recommended that you adopt just those lizards that are easy to handle and look after.
But there are a few things one must remember when owning or planning to own a pet lizard. Unlike cats or dogs, these animals are usually unfriendly. Most lizards don't like being handled and are aloof, if not apprehensive, towards humans. So proper care and precaution must be observed when owning and handling one.
Handle your dragon daily. This will develop their trust towards humans and build their bond with you. Just make sure that you are gentle in handling them and that you never pick them up them up with their tail. They dislike this and will make them thrash about, which is harmful for your baby dragon. You may choose to scoop them up with your cupped hands.
If you have kids, then think about getting a leopard gecko, water dragon or bearded dragon as not all lizards are ideal pets for children. Make sure you teach your kids how to take care of the lizard and supervise them in the beginning to ensure they handle them correctly.
If your child wants a lizard, make sure both you and your child do your research. These are exotic animals and have care requirements that are very different from a cat or dog. If you see your child is not properly caring for the animal then it is your responsibility to do so. Do not acquire the lizard if you are not 100% sure you and your child can care for it. Lizards can live for 15-20-even more years, so make sure you do your research before diving into this long-term relationship!
